It was at this time of year back in 2007 when Saturday Night Live gave us a brand new Christmas carol. Cast member Andy Samberg and host Justin Timberlake teamed up in an SNL Digital Short to share what special gift it was that they'd like to give their significant others. . . in a box.
The video has the sound and look of an early 90's R&B group. Color Me Badd had a hit in the early 90's with their song "I Wanna Sex You Up." Timberlake and Samberg play it for laughs but really their lyrics aren't any dirtier, and facial hair not any sillier, than Color Me Badd's was back then.
The result: An instant classic for SNL that re-aired on their prime-time Christmas special this year, and will likely air on their specials for years to come. Who knows, maybe it will become one of those Christmas songs redone over and over again. When he wrote "The Christmas Song" Mel Torme had no way of knowing his song would be covered over a hundred times in the years after. Adam Sandler debuted "The Chanukah Song" on SNL and it's been redone by Neil Diamond. Is it so far fetched to think we may be hearing covers of this in the future?
