Sony was really starting to get it right it seemed. They were steadily gaining momentum in the US with titles like Heavy Rain freshly released and games like God of War III and MLB 10: The Show on the horizon, it seemed like the PS3 could finally leave third place sales in this console war in the past, but then something catastrophic happened.
Sometime on Sunday, a glitch occurred in the Playstation 3 system which set clocks back to December 31st, 1999. Many believe that this is a glitch that came packaged in the latest update, but others believe that it is related to the turnover between February and March.
The glitch doesn't seem to be tied with the Playstation Network, as players can still browse the Playstation Store, download demos, and browse the web (if they choose to browse the web with Playstation 3's browser). The problem comes when players try to play a game that requires they connect to the Trophy network. When players try to play a game that connects to the Trophy network, players will receive an error message and will be unable to continue to the game. included in this list of games that cannot be played right now is Sony's heavy-hitter, Heavy Rain.
Many players have attempted to change the internal date of the PS3, either by internet, or by manually going onto console itself and switching it, but either way, when the Playstation 3 system is powered on, the date will switch back. This will occur whether the player is connected to the internet or not, which signals its a hardware issue at this point.
So how does this affect games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band? For Rock Band 2, affected consoles cannot access downloadable content, Lego Rock Band imports or even imports from the original Rock Band. People are reporting that more recent Guitar Hero games are having difficulty accessing downloadable content as well.
So what is Sony doing in terms of damage control? Well, not too much. They have instructed everyone to follow their Twitter account for the "latest updates", but the latest update, as of now, is a Tweet from over 13 hours ago stating that PS3 Slims seem to be unaffected.

The way they have entirely ignored its customers, leaving them in the dark through this process with little to entirely nonexistent updates offering no solution or so much as hope pretty much sums up how sony treats its customers and reinforces that it belongs in 3rd place in this console war. Sony is working on a fix. They can't release an update till they make one that works... They obviously have been working more than 12 hours straight on this fix. One day of repair is a easy price to pay for a system that has the lowest failure rate. I just hope they get it up and going soon. I'm tired of watching my buddy play MW on his 360.

Really? I can't seem to think of anyone I know with a 360 that doesn't envy blu rays. Nor' do I know ANYONE with a 360 that has not had to lose it for 2 weeks to a month, because of a crash... So its 24 hours now, luckily I beat heavy rain for the first time just before the crash happened. I think Sony will get it back and running soon... Oh well a day without video games... guess one of the largest gaming demographics have to see what outside is like.
I don't believe you will lose data from the PSN because they do have record of that. Everyone is worried about their trophies and in some places I've read people losing game saves.. but at this point anything is possible. It's just a waiting game now.
This is straight BS! We are paying customers and Sony should reimburse its customers in some type of way. If this doesnt get resolved asap, I will never recommend PS3 to anyone again....
Blu Ray is definitely Sony's edge on the market. The ability to save more information a disc then the competitor is a plus. I know many people who bought the ps3 just for the ability to play blu ray. Sony will not have a problem recovering from this hardware glitch.
Ive lost my Heavy Rain and COD:MW2 trophies. Cannot sign in or play either game. A weird thing is my date was set to Dec. 31, 2000 not 1,1,200 or 12,31,1993. I found that odd. No save data was corrupted though that I am glad for. all I want is the problem fixed. Ive made no plans to "switch side' and go to the 360. Things like this happen thats what we get with technology. Just be patient, Sony is probably working on it long and hard.

I was also able to change my date and clock back to normal and it is staying. I think a lot of people could do without video games for a while. LOL I think that Sony will fix it. I don't understand the whole they are a bad company. And I doubt they are really worried about your idle threats to switch to a 360 if its not fixed NOW! Just a bunch of big ass babies in my opinion.
Those of you saying that we ar "paying customers", last time I checked the PSN was a free service provided by Sony for us gamers. Technology sometimes gets bit in the ass. Get over it, go outside and breathe some fresh air for a few days. Still beats the hell out of paying for the XBOX Live service and still getting glitches....

What a joke of an article!!!!!! This glitch is nothing compared to the 360 failure rate. Sony has released a statement that a fix would be released within 24 hours. I have had my ps3 since lauch date and have yet to have an issue. My brother in law has gone through 3 xbox systmes until he opted to buy the ps3 slim.

Its not like they left us sitting here for a week with out any news. They're working on it. Be patient. Are you going to scrap an expensive peice of equipment overnight because of one problem that didn't have an immediate fix?

I can play all my games offline fine no problem tested on 60GB PS3 2 80GB PS3 Backwards compatible and lastly 80GB not backward compatible. I also manage to get trophies but no online yet.

Guys please relax - Every single thing in todays world that we know of has minor bumps and glitches. This is no big deal. I understand that it can be frustrating but hey, shift happens...so please relax. I am 100% sure and confident that Sony is working on this and will be able to fix this soon if they haven't already.
Well this is my first time using a forum to write about something and about this problem with the PSN i guess is going to be fix. Now for those who want to switch to the xbox just think about it u gonna have to pay to be able to play online plus u have to buy some type of **** to make it wireless plus buying the games again when u get online gaming for free with psn, and about losing your data I'll tell u won't lose it because I have another ps3 and I can play in my account and everything is the same.

Um... what do you expect them to do? Have a magical fix in 10 seconds? They said they are working on it and only 13 hours have passed. How is that "not much"? They responded ASAP about it. How else are they supposed to communicate with their customers? That's WHY they have a twitter account.
Why don't you talk about a company that screws over its consumers like Microsoft. RROD is STILL a problem, even in the Elites, and yet you don't criticize them for not doing anything about it.

And also - whoever wrote this article seems to have some personal problem with Sony. Sony kicks the hell outta Xbox. That's why they call it the "Play Station" bcuz for one, they think outside the "box" AND DONT CHARGE $50.00 a year like the "box" eventhough it like $4 & some change a month. YOU CANT ACCESS the PS3 store or download demos, because in order to do that u need to be signed in, yet with the problem that has occured u can't sign in u clown!
I got 2 ps3 systems n there both fat ps3 too. one works but the other ps3 doesn't anyone knows why is that? And is it alright to play the ps3 that works or wait for the update.

Just to address any thoughts that I might be biased against Sony, I actually own both an Xbox 360 and a PLaystation 3 and have spent thousands on each. The only reason I have spent more on the 360 is due to the fact that I have bought more 360's due to their fail rate. I'm currently on my 5th 360 and 2nd PS3 (a slim in case you're wondering), so I know where the reliability numbers stand. I hope that addresses the people that are claiming I am a 360 fanboy.
