The pigs are taking over!
As I'm sure you heard over the weekend, a certain strain of swine flu is on its way to becoming a global pandemic. If you're a hypochondriac like I am, this is all quite terrifying. So to blunt some of the paranoia, I offer you a few good songs about pigs to keep your mood high as you duck this outbreak.
Pink Floyd: Pigs on the Wing Pt. 1, Pigs on the Wing Pt. 2, Pigs (Three Different Ones)
Now this is pretty convenient. One album with three songs about pigs. I recommend downloading all of Animals because it's a great album, but the Pig songs are especially fantastic. The two "Pigs on the Wing" songs are more like an intro/outro to the alubm, but they're lovely. "Pigs (Three Different Ones)" is a pulsing highlight, featuring great melodies, guitar work and pig themed lyrics like "Pig stain on your fat chin. What do you hope to find? When you're down in the pig mine."
Nine Inch Nails: Piggy
Trent Reznor's industrial slo-jam is a highlight of his classic 90's album, The Downward Spiral. Like many of the songs on this list, Reznor is most likely not talking about farm swine when he sings "Hey pig, yeah you . Hey pig piggy pig pig pig."
The Beatles: Piggies
This majestic George Harrison nursery rhyme from The White Album has become overshadowed due to its ties to Charles Manson, who appropriated the lyrics for his sick "mission." To Manson, the piggies were the "establishment" and needed to be wiped out. He even wrote "Political Piggy" in blood at one of his murder scenes. But if you can separate Manson from the Beatles' song, you'll enjoy quite a fun little ditty about piggies playing and eating bacon. (Note: this can't be downloaded from iTunes because the Beatles haven't sold their digital rights).
Ween: There's A Pig
Like many "pig" songs out there, this one's about a cop. Found only on their single for Voodoo Lady, it's worth checking out, especially because those scared about swine flu can easily take lyrics like "this pig, he's after me, he's got my number, but i'm still free" as a rallying cry. (This track also isn't available on iTunes, but you can hear the song in this great homemade video here).
There's plenty more swine-arrific songs out there. Feel free to chime in with your favorite pig number.
