A GREAT first drum from Remo
Ok, how many of you parents reading this have always wanted to play the drums? Or even have a drum or two in your home already? There is likely no instrument that will give your child more musical joy then the drum. Big drum, little drum, drum set or hand drum, ocean drum or talking drum. We could drum on and on!
Why is the drum such a great instrument to have on hand? Let’s put yourself in your child’s shoes, or better yet, put yourself in their onesey since they may not be wearing shoes. Perhaps they are not even crawling yet, but…they can hold a mallet (that’s drum talk for stick that strikes the drum). With a little help, they can meet mallet to drum and WOW! Watch the look on their face…I can make a sound from my arm moving! Let’s do that again! And before you know it, your little non-walking, non-talking bambino is figuring out cause and effect. When I do this, that happens. I want to do more of this!

f your child is a little older, holds the drum with one hand, and plays the mallet with the other hand, guess what? They are using both hemispheres of the brain, increasing coordination, both fine and gross motor. What a fantastic way to learn, by playing the drum! And if your child likes to sing AND play the drum, now THAT is coordination most of us adults wish we could master. Watch a video of one of our fans, Ethan (barely 3), while he plays the drum and sings one of our songs.
HURRAY! to Ethan for letting his music shine! And HURRAY! to Ethans’ parents for having drums close at hand.
Here are 3 things I recommend:
1) Have a hand drum whose head is 8 – 10 inches in diameter (toy drums made of plastic not recommended)
2) Have a mallet that has a soft or yarn head (will not be quite as loud)
3) Have your own drum too, and play games together –see if they can copy your pattern, keep it simple and start with 4 beats
