Blending country western harmony and blues with the pile driving force of punk rock, the legendary band X will command the stage at Slim's for two nights, December 30th and 31st for a special New Years Eve performance.
Getting into the holiday spirit the band gathered in Billy Zoom’s “Studio A” to lay down a digital 45 called, “Merry Xmas" featuring “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” and “Jingle Bells,” available through the online music store Emusic.
Founding member John Doe will be playing a few dates in 2010 backing up The Blasters in support of "Country Club," the album he recorded with Toronto indie band, The Sadies. Doe recently opened Bob Dylan’s second night of a three night gig at the Hollywood Palladium and released a solo album in 2007 called “A Year in The Wilderness” featuring guests Dave Alvin, Jill Sobule, Kathleen Edwards, Dan Auerbach (from The Black Keys), Greg Leisz and Aimee Mann.
Fervent singer Exene Cervenka has produced the haunting and luscious album “Somewhere Gone,” her first solo venture since 1991. The record is a somber yet beautiful reminder of musician Amy Farris who performs on the album and died before its release.
Exene, always one to tackle troubling issues head-on and not settle for easy answers, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis earlier in the year. She explains on her website she wasn’t feeling quite right and went in for tests only to discover the disease had been affecting her for longer than she realized.
“I am choosing to see the positive in it,” Exene writes. “My focus will certainly be on maintaining my health - many people remain strong and continue to live their lives as productively as they had before an MS diagnosis and I plan to be one of those people.”
Exene and X have been committed to Sweet Relief Musicians Fund since the mid-90’s. The organization provides aide to uninsured artists struggling with illness and disability. The fund was created by musician Victoria Williams when she herself was diagnosed with MS in 1992.
An accomplished performer, author, and artist, Exene just wrapped up an art exhibit titled “Celestial Ash” at the Craft and Folk Art Museum.
X will perform at Slim’s Dec 30-31. The address is 333 11th Street at Harrison Doors open at 9pm both nights.
