Oscar nominations were announced Tuesday morning in Beverly Hills, California and the Academy Award nominations for the Best Original Score category were dominated by veterans and past winners.
James Horner earned his tenth Oscar nomination for his score for James Cameron's 'Avatar'. Horner won the Academy Award in 1998 for the score for Cameron's other billion dollar blockbuster Titanic. James Horner was also nominated for his score to Cameron's 'Aliens' in 1986. Horner has been nominated eight times in the Best Original Score category and twice for Best Original Song.
Hans Zimmer received his seventh Oscar nomination for his score to 'Sherlock Holmes'. Zimmer won the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 1994 for 'The Lion King'. Other Oscar nominated scores from Hans Zimmer include the music from 'Gladiator,' 'The Thin Red Line' and 'As Good As it Gets'.
Alexandre Desplat received his third Oscar nomination for this year's score to 'Fantastic Mr. Fox'. The French composer was previously nominated for the music of 'The Queen' in 2006 and 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' in 2008. Desplat has never won the Academy Award.
Composers Marco Beltrami and Buck Sanders share this year's Oscar nomination for Best Original Score for their work in 'The Hurt Locker'. Beltrami was previously nominated for his score to '3:10 to Yuma' in 2007. This is the first Academy Award nomination for Buck Sanders, whose previously scores include those for 'Max Payne' and 'Descent'. Sanders is the only newcomer in the category.
Michael Giacchino was announced as the final Best Original Score Oscar contender for work on the film 'Up'. Giacchino was previously nominated for an Oscar for the film 'Ratatouille' but is most well known for his Emmy winning score for the hit television show 'LOST'.
The Academy Awards will be held at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood, California on March 7, 2010 at 8:00PM EST. This year's ceremony will be hosted by comedian Steve Martin.
