The death of Golden Girls actress Rue McClanahan on Thursday had fans of the popular 80s sitcom choked up world wide. The achingly appropriate Golden Girls theme song 'Thank You For Being A Friend' got a huge spike in popularity as fans sought a way to pay tribute in the wake of Rue McClanahan's death.

'Thank You For Being a Friend' was written by singer-songwriter and Burbank, California native Andrew Gold in 1978. It was a Top 10 Hit for Gold, who went on to compose the theme song 'Final Frontier' for the 1990s hit sitcom 'Mad About You.'
The Golden Girls theme song version of 'Thank You For Being A Friend' is performed by Cynthia Fee.
Rue McClanahan reportedly died after a massive stroke. She was 76 years old.

I love Andrew Gold. I saw him in concert 3 times and got his autograph. I then got all golden girls except for Estelle to sign the Andrew Gold record he had signed. I and my family treasure it and listen to it every Sunday night.
