CD review: Amos Lee's Last Days at the Lodge

Amos Lee (wikipedia)

After a pair of celebrated albums – and being thought of in the media as the male Norah Jones – Amos Lee further develops the dulcet soul refinement of his previous outings on Last Days at the Lodge. Don Was institutes a fuller production, along with musical support from Texas guitar ace Doyle Bramhall, Jr., fabled Muscle Shoals session master Spooner Oldham on keyboards, drummer James Gadson and bassist Pino Palladino.

On the most striking song, the leadoff track “Listen,” Lee pinches and snips lyrics like his erstwhile tourmate Bob Dylan. The Philly-born singer-songwriter warbles in the style of his idol Al Green on “Won’t Let Me Go” and puts down a suave falsetto over the funky wah-wah groove of “Jails and Bombs.” “Street Corner Preacher” is an adept character study of pathos, fury and purpose.

If he keeps writing material this ardent and sustantial, Lee’ll find himself side by side with the music galaxy's brightest stars.

Hear G. Brown 6-10 weekdays on 102.3 KCUV (www.kcuvradio.com). Amos Lee’s Last Days at the Lodge is the ‘CUV CD of the Week.
