Music this weekend- January 27-29

There is plenty to see and hear this weekend in the greater Cincinnati area, so if you are looking for something to chase away the winter blues, there are many options.

If you are looking to kick the weekend off early, the Dan Varner Band will be doing Party on the Plaza kicking off at 5:30 p.m., Friday at the Anderson Center Theater on Five Mile Road.  This country band always keeps a rock edge and should provide a fine time for people looking for some after work relaxation.

Naked Karate Girls is a local Cincinnati favorite and will be performing tonight at Bar 71.  The show is free and listed as all ages.  The band looks like they stepped out of a bad 70's cop drama but they are guranteed to keep folks dancing.  Bar 71 is located just off Interstate 71 at the Fields-Ertel exit near the old offices of Procter and Gamble in Governors Square.

Just north of town, in Monroe, I will be playing with the Rick House Band at the Froggy Blues Cafe. Rick is a past Cammy Award winner as the Best Rock Insturmentalist in the Cincinnati area for his work with Big In Iowa.  Now the band concentrates on covers of some of the most memorable classic rock.

For those with a little more up scale taste, Lang Lang will be performing with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra on Friday and Saturday at Music Hall.  The world renown pianist will be performing the Liszt Piano Concerto No. 1 to celebrate what would have been the 200th birthday of Franz Liszt.  The show is scheduled for 8 p.m. on both nights and you can get information by visiting the CSO's website.

For country fans, Loretta Lynn will be performing Saturday at the Belterra Casino.  Lynn is a music legend who's career was chronicled in the movie Coal Miners Daughter.  She has been singing for more than 50 years and is in the Country Music Hall of Fame.

There are many other entertainment options for this weekend.  If you are looking for other suggestions or a more complete list, try the events sections in the Cincinnati Enquirer, CityBeat or WNKU.
