It was a festive evening in NoDa this Saturday night. Breaking Laces were still in town and playing the “Cash Van” game around NoDa. April Verch was entertaining a fairly full Evening Muse venue with her Folksy Bluegrass. The late show partiers were beginning to arrive for the Boston based rock groups Sarah Borges & the Broken Singles and Eilen Jewell performances at the Evening Muse. Behind the Dog Bar, all it took was 90 seconds and a couple of Charlottes low-life’s with a snub-nosed 38 pistol to put a damper on what had here-to-fore been a perfect evening. Fortunately noone was hurt and the bad guys left the scene in a hurry with a few more dollars than they had arrived with and the Charlotte police on the look out for them. .

Eilen Jewel @ The Evening Muse 11/14/09
In true NoDa-wood fashion, the show (party) must go on! Eilen Jewel opened the late show. Expecting a roots based rock sound, what the audience received was a complex arrangement of Americana folk with a Kinks style rock beat and a sultry voice bringing enlightened story-telling lyrics. Supported by her longtime band of Jason Beek (drums, harmony vocals), Jerry Miller (electric, acoustic, and steel guitars), and Johnny Sciascia (upright bass), Eilen Jewel performed many of the tunes found on her latest CD release “Sea of Tears”.

It’s easy to understand how Eilen has met with critical acclaim here in the US as well as in Europe. The audience of the Evening Muse sure enjoyed her artistic sound.

Sarah Borges @ The Evening Muse - 11/14/09
The showcase of this evening was the powerpacked bundle of energy, joy, rock, humor and tantilizingly sexy singer-songwriter known as Sarah Borges - supported by her very talented compliment of musicians and friends called the Broken Singles. Sarah allowed the audience to sit back and be a listening room for the total length of one song before she planted herself in a seat in the middle of the room and invited everyone to take several steps forward and join the band in what would become a rocking and dancing party.

Performing mostly original tunes from her latest CD release “The Stars Are Out” the band led an on-their-feet audience with rock tunes which are dance friendly and highly energized. Sarah’s engaging personality won over the audience as they became part of her show, feeling empowered to relax and enjoy themselves.
It was great to see Eilen and Sarah both engaging with the audience after the show, discussing their music and sharing their merchandise as many fans wanted to take a piece of the night home with them.
This was a powerful night of quality rock music out of with crisp, clear and sultry vocals – a tantilizing night of entertainment which ended extremely well after getting off to a perilous start.
Keepin’ it Live,
