Evening Muse late show review - featuring Last November, No Second Troy & Flagship - Feb 21 2009

No Second Troy rocks The Evening Muse

Last November - With half the band members out or ill, Luke Pilgram & Tyler Ayer decided the show must go on!  They opened this acoustic rock'n roll late show with a bang.  Even as the show started the Evening Muse was nearing capacity - this line up is one that few people wanted to miss.   Tyler, who is usually the bass player for the band strapped on an acoustic guitar for this show and performed admirably.  I enjoyed the pop rock sound and the lyrics of young songwriter Luke Pilgrim.  This show will not be the last one I catch of Last November.  I look forward to seeing the entire band to gain a better appreciation for what their sound truly is. No Second Troy - Washington DC based - This band has been "about" to break-out for the past two years according to every press account written about the band.  While they have continued to meet with a rising tide of popularity, one can only wonder what it is that holds them back from this ellusive  commercial success and national recording contract.  It's my hope that it is their desire to hold onto what they are and are not willing to sign with anyone who would ruin their sound or challenge their integrity with compromise as appears to have happened to the band I-Nine.  I encourge these guys to hold onto their sound and stay true to themselves as they have something very special which will eventually bring them the commercial success they are so deserving of.  Entirely too many rock bands depend on the level of the noise covering their lack of true musical talent.  That's not the case with this band.  Their lyrics are refined and their music is defined with meaningful notes and rhythm.  Photos from the No Second Troy set.

Flagship - This Charlotte based group certainly goes for the high energy British style of rock.  A thundering thump of drums, loud guitar rifts, and highly energized vocals kept the relatively young crowd engaged.  On their feet and into the band, the crowd held onto the vibes into the morning hour! As a long-time fan of rock'n roll I enjoyed this set.  They were not too far from the old punk rock or head banging music, but their sound did not cross that line for me.  There was melody, their was rhythm and rhyme.  Photos from the Flagship set.

Over all this night was a definition in sensory overload - in a good way. All three bands that entertained us in this evenings late show had a distinctive sound within the defined boundaries of rock'n roll.  It's this diversity that has kept three generations of music lovers rocking and I personally hope it stays that way.  Keeping the music scene live, keeping the energy level high, keeping the rest of us guessing about what will come next around the bend.

Special thanks to Joe and Lea at The Evening Muse for having the courage to bring a night like this to Charlotte in their unique venue!

Cheers,

Monty

I appreciate your great review of No Second Troy, Monty--they're my #1 fave! Hope you had a chance to talk to them, because they're wonderful people as well as talented musicians--so deserving of the break-out you speak of!

I agree on Last November--would like to hear them with their full band. But I will say that I really enjoyed the lead singer's voice--I think there is more to be heard there for sure.
