Nelly Furtado dishes dirt on new release

Nelly Furtado live in Manchester Arena 2007

Canadian singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado’s latest release Mi Plan (Spanish for "My Plan") is the “Maneater” hitmaker’s 1st full-length Spanish release and her 4th studio album overall.  It features 12 new songs (all but 2 co-written by Furtado) and includes guest appearances by Josh Groban, Alex Cuba, Alejandro Fernadez, Concha Buika, Juan Luis Guerra, Julietta Venega and La Mala Rodriguez.

Furtado's last release, the multiplatinum, dance-flavoured Loose was primarily recorded at night. The 2006 CD captured the sultry "Say It Right" hitmaker in party mode, highlighting her vocals over Timbaland-produced dance beats.

“Mi Plan,” released Sept 15, takes an opposite approach. The sessions were recorded during the day and reflect her current life as a married mom.

In a recent AP interview, Furtado says “I would literally wake up in the morning, drive my daughter to school and drive right to the studio and work all day. That’s why it has a fresh, light, pure energy.”

The recently married pop star says the main theme in the new album is love.
“I’ve been really happy. It’s been a fun year for me. I just got married a year ago and I think that a lot of the sort of commitment and joy of commitment, that experience ... helps me creatively.”

The 30-year-old  Grammy award winner, whose parents were Portuguese immigrants, says writing in Spanish helped her overcome the writer’s block that immerged after trying to recreate songs like her No. 1 hits “Promiscuous” and “Say It Right.”

“I think after eight years of recording English pop songs I just had writer’s block. And then when I started writing pop songs in Spanish, I really felt alive again. ...and actually it cured my writer’s block because I have since written in English again.”

The “Give It to Me” hitmaker is also working on an upcoming English album. In a recent video interview, Furtado said, "Timbaland and I hooked up in the studio about three months ago and we wrote 20 songs in two days. It was really inspired. I think maybe some of that material will be on my English album."

"Bajo Otra Luz" featuring Julieta Venegas and La Mala Rodriguez is the latest single from her Spanish release
