With the holidays just around the corner, Arta Gallery has prepared a special December exhibition, Light of Winter, “to stimulate the senses and feed the soul.”

The art gallery, located in Toronto’s historic Distillery District, is currently home to numerous multi-textured original creations including paintings, sculptures, prints, photography, ceramic and glass pieces and jewellery.

When you walk through the doors to the gallery, Bret Culp’s black and white photo of an old castle commands your attention. Appropriately titled, The Transience of Power captures your gaze and locks you in. Whether it’s the size of the photo or its overall beauty, something about it won’t let you look away until you’ve fully taken in its natural charm.

Then there’s Pat Stanley’s magnificent painting, Surface Drift. Mostly yellow, with an evening glow this piece depicts two joint buildings. Stanley created a wonderful sparkling, snow effect that makes you appreciate the joy of falling snow.

The lines and texture of Carolanne MacLean’s Lines 1 painting are truly exquisite. It’s like looking into a snow covered forest with winter’s bare branches exposed.

The colourful wax pieces from Ross Reynolds immediately makes you think of crayons and triggers the joy of colouring as a child. It’s hard not to smile when looking at these paintings.

Moving over to the 3D creations, Susan Rankin’s blown glass traditional vases are simple in their shape, but it’s the colouring of each vase that makes them unique and true pieces of art. On the other side of the gallery there is nothing simple about her blown glass flower vases. The delicacy it would take to create the petals with such texture and realism requires a patient personality and a lot of love for the medium.

The exhibit as a whole displays a large number of mesmerizing pieces that your eyes will truly appreciate. It runs until Dec. 24.
