Museum of African American Music, Art, and Culture

The Grand Opening of the Museum of African American Music, Art, and Culture is scheduled for 2012. It will be built at the intersection of Jefferson Street and Rosa Parks Boulevard next to the Bicentennial Mall. Currently the project is in the schematic Design Phase. Construction plans and designs are being finalized. Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2010 and is expected to last 18 months.

An impressive building, it will include limestone and etched glass to complement the Bicentennial Mall. At the intersection guests will enter through the Tower of Impact, a 64 feet transparent drum form that is modeled after an architectural ruin from the ancient city of Great Zimbabwe. The Conical Tower The 64-foot height of the Tower refers to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. A historic ruling that eliminated discrimination practices to deter black voters, it called for the desegregation of public facilities and of public education, and outlawed employee discrimination. Images of African American musicians, artists, and performers will wrap around the building. Nine large etched glass photos of celebrated African American musicians with ties to Music City will face Jefferson Street. The museum will tell the story of African American Music as it evolved internationally, nationally, and locally.
