Following are answers to last week’s questions:

QUESTION 1: In St. Louis, what is the “confluence?”
ANSWER 1: The confluence is the place where the Missouri River joins with the Mississippi River. From that point the Mighty Mississippi flows southward, toward New Orleans.

QUESTION 2: Who was the first St. Louisan to receive his pilot’s license?
ANSWER 2: Major Albert Lambert, who trained with Orville Wright. Our major airport, Lambert-St. Louis International, is named for him.

QUESTION 3: When and where was the world’s first successful pneumonectomy (lung removal) operation performed, to treat lung cancer?
ANSWER 3: April 5, 1933, at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. Because the cancer was so widespread, the decision was made during surgery to remove the entire lung. Ironically, Dr Evarts A. Graham, the surgeon who performed the operation, would die nearly 25 years later from lung cancer.

QUESTION 4: How many cars are in each chain, traveling up the north and south legs of the Gateway Arch?
ANSWER 4: Eight tram cars travel to the top of the Gateway Arch in each leg. Once at the top, visitors can enjoy the view for as long as they like (until closing time).

QUESTION 5: What is comedienne Phyllis Diller’s connection to St. Louis?
ANSWER 5: After moving to Webster Groves in 1961, Phyllis Diller honed her act in St. Louis clubs such as Gaslight Square's Crystal Palace.
