Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker led the winners at the the Orange British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) which were handed out at London’s Royal Opera House last night.

The film took the awards for best picture, director, original screenplay, editing, cinematography and sound -  neither James Cameron’s Avatar or Lone Scherfig’s An Education (which had lead the nominations along with The Hurt Locker) came close to winning as many awards.

Andrea Arnold’s Fish Tank - which opened this past Friday at Toronto's Cumberland Theatre - took the night’s biggest Brit-centric prize, winning over An EducationMoon, Nowhere Boy and In The Loop for the Best British Film award.

Meanwhile, Mo’Nique and Christoph Waltz continued their dominance of the supporting acting categories which pretty much makes them a lock to win at the Oscars.

“Thank you so much,” Waltz said in his acceptance speech. “Supporting actor? Supported actor. From the moment fate dropped me in front of Quentin Tarantino, everyone has supported me absolutely. What I have with Quentin Tarantino is summed up very quickly: no Quentin, no Inglourious Basterds; no Quentin, no Hans Landa; no Quentin, no Christoph at the BAFTAs or anywhere else.”

Lead acting honours went to homegrown talents Carey Mulligan and Colin Firth for their work on An Education and A Single Man - a deviation from what's predicted to happen on Oscar night.

James Cameron's Avatar, took the production design and visual effects awards.  It was Cameron's first time at the BAFTAs since 1997's Titanic lost every single award it was nominated for.
