DANIEL CRAIG AS JAMES BOND

Having been born in 1968, Daniel Craig holds the distinction of being the only Bond portrayer to be born after the series had started and after Ian Fleming had died.  His approach to the role was to add more emotional depth which he accomplished without showing too much vulnerability.  The viewer can read his emotions on his face and in his eyes but there is not a tangible closeness.  One is not supposed to be close to an anti-hero as Craig describes the role.

Stating that Connery was his favorite Bond, Craig was quick to point out his ability to seperate himself.  "I'd never copy somebody else," he said.  "I would never do an impression of anybody else or try and improve on what they did.  That would be a pointless exercise for me."

Very true.  Each previous actor brought his own touch to the role.  Each one was enough different that the change was obvious yet they each were playing the same part.  In a sense, each actor re-imagined the franchise but Craig was given the chance to take it a step further.  "Casino Royale" was again a reworked version of a story written by Fleming.  Gadgets and cars were secondary to the storyline and the action was more concentrated, more intense.  Gone were the pun-heavy quips, replaced by genuine reactions that were human without losing the fantasy.

Both of Craig's films have done extremely well at the box office.  Acceptance of his light complexion and reddish-blond hair had also been solid.  In addition, Connery, Moore, Dalton and Brosnan were all supportive of Craig and generous with their praise.

Despite all that, it could be a while till he gets his third go.  Craig knew that going in.  Even if all the lawsuits are settled and the lawyers go away tomorrow, it will be a while.  Craig is not sitting at home awaiting a call.  He is currently filming "Cowboys and Aliens" for director Jon Favreau and has two films which are in post-production.  He also has committed to at least two upcoming projects.  It is a fond hope that Craig will return as Bond.  Obviously, there are other men who could take over the role but Craig has earned the right to continue.
