'New Moon' director talks balancing Robert Pattinson in film

How do you balance the hordes of Robert Pattinson fans needing their Robbie fix while staying true to Stephenie Meyer’s source material? That’s the problem The Twilight Saga: New Moon director Chris Weitz faces as his latest feature looms closer to its November 20th release date.

“[We wanted to avoid] just randomly inserting Rob throughout the movie in a back-at-the-ranch sort of way, which would just be about box office and us being worried about whether people would deal with the darkness of the second book. People are actually very ready for [the dark] aspect of it,” Weitz said to MTV. “You’ll see quite a lot of Rob in the film, but it’s seen subjectively, through Bella’s eyes. It’s also in dreams that she has of him as well.”

In New Moon, Pattinson’s Edward Cullen is seen as a figment of Bella’s (Kristen Stewart) imagination as she grows closer to her old BFF Jacob (Taylor Lautner).

Weitz goes on: “It strikes this very fine balance between too much Rob and too little Rob… Well, I know for a lot of people there’s no such thing as too much Rob. But we’ve got a nice dose of Taylor to sweeten any Rob deficiencies. It is a disease that can only be treated with Vitamin T, for Taylor.”

Twilighters! What do you think? Abandon the novel and pump the movie with Patty or keep it real and stay true to the original intent?

I love Rob Pattinson, but I love the books more. Stay true to the book, which is how Rob would vote, too. It makes his reappearance in Voltura that much more anticipated and climactic, as it should be. Sometimes less is more.
