Paramount Pictures is considering a sequel to the horror-themed hit “Paranormal Activity,” a move that is considerably less of a surprise than the success of the film itself. CEO Philippe Dauman says the movie has been one of those surprise hits that comes along only rarely, grossing $85 million in the U.S. already, according to “The Hollywood Reporter.”
Bearing in mind that the independently made thriller reportedly cost fifteen thousand dollars or less to make, “Paranormal Activity” is clearly the owner of the highest profit margin of any film released this year.
Given that a follow-up release wouldn't have the same element of surprise as "Paranormal Activity," it will be key to craft a smart approach to a sequel, Dauman told THR. "Our team will come up with the right creative and marketing approach to make sure that we benefit from a sequel.”
In 1991, “The Blair Witch Project,” another independently made, low-cost horror film was a profit machine as well, likewise generating much talk about a revolution in the types of movies Hollywood would make. A sequel, “Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2” did not enjoy the same level of success, and a planned third film has yet to materialize.
Asked if the "Paranormal" model of a low-cost, high box office film could be easily replicated with other releases, he said no, pointing to how much time passed between "The Blair Witch Project" and "Paranormal Activity."
