According to the AP, the PBS show designed to give kids a love of reading has ended.
"Reading Rainbow", starring LeVar Burton ceased filming several years ago due to a large slip in ratings. Reruns have been broadcast ever since.
The beginning of the end of the show can be traced back to the Bush Administration. A decision was made to put funds into programs that would teach children how to read. "Reading Rainbow" taught children why. How to love to read.
"Reading Rainbow's" site will be up until December.
The program will be available for classrooms with off-air educational rights in effect for a year. (Money for the rights to the show were cut by the Bush Administration which is the reason for the cancellation.)
There are discussions going on to start a literacy site to continue the show's local story contests for kids on a national level.
The best gift you could ever give to your young child is to teach them to read.

So much for "Hope and change" when morons are still blaming Bush for everything. We're getting raped of our freedoms but all be damned, a show that nobody watched anymore got cut.
Parents are responsible for teaching their kids how to read. Not a television show.
Hi Mac; Thanks for stopping in. Name calling isn't necessary as it makes the rest of your comment have less credibility.
The Bush administration did cut funds, so "following the money" brings you straight to Bush.
People did watch the show, it hasn't had new episodes in several years, but was shown because it was unique. It didn't teach reading, it taught, WHY to read. It instilled the LOVE of books. Nobody teaches that.
And good luck with people teaching their kids to read...with few exceptions, like children home-schooled or etc. most kids are stuck with our inadequate school system.
I do value your opinion, but need to clarify my reasons for my article.
As a democrat, I am embarassed by your article. George Bush did not cancel the show. Low ratings cancelled the show. In my area, Reading Rainbow hasn't been shown on PBS in well over a decade, well before Bush took office.
Bush may be responsible for a lot of awful things, but he is not responsible for this.
"As a democrat, I am embarassed by your article..."
As a Democrat, I am embarrassed by your comments. Your ignorance makes us all look like "morons" you troll.
Clearly "Mac" is not a parent, if he/she were the comments posted would have been less about defending/attacking the politics (even if they are a focus of the article), and more geared towards the loss of one of the few decent shows left.
Reading Rainbow is an institution - and I for one would much prefer my children watch Reading Rainbow over Teletubbies - which by its nature instills nothing more than idiocy in our children.
"Parents are responsible for teaching their kids how to read. Not a television show."
I couldn't agree more, though your late concern over the children is nothing more than your own personal bailout.
I could care less why the show no longer exists, the real focus is that it doesn't.

Mac, where were you when Bush was the one "raping us of our freedoms" as you so inarticulately put it? I assume you feel the current administration is "raping" your freedoms. How? The Patriot Act? Homeland Security? Checking your library reading list? Probably not. Morons like you don't read. And you don't have a thing to say when one of your own is the one doing the "raping".
