The celebration of Independence Day is nearly here. With the Denver Metro area forecasted to be in the high 80’s through most of the weekend, an air conditioned theater is certainly not a poor decision. There are an entire plethora of offerings that go beyond The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the only wide release taking on the love torn trio is The Last Airbender, M. Night Shyamalan’s attempt to regain his momentum after a series of mediocre box office results and audience reception.
The Denver Film Society is bringing a huge variety of screenings this week. Tonight is the Film on the Rocks presentation of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off at Red Rocks.
July 1 is the screening of an issue very heated in America currently, America. The documentary, 9500 Liberty, a look at a Virginia community torn when immigration legislation passes and director Eric Byler will be in person for the 7 p.m. showing. The film continues through the 4th of July.
The Watching Hour series presents the 2000 tongue in cheek horror comedy Psycho Beach Party with Amy Adams and Lauren Ambrose. The film shows July 2 and 3 at 10:00 p.m. both nights. There is a beach party July 2 at 8:30p including free beer and Basil Doc's Pizza.
July 2 through 8 brings two different areas of controversy to light via documentaries showing at the Starz Film Center. Cinema Q continues the LGBT film programming with 8 - The Mormon Proposition. The documentary looks at the infamous Proposition 8 and how religious influence in politics helped to reverse the decision. The other film, a Starz Film Center exclusive, is Behind the Burly Q. The documentary looks into the world of burlesque and how film changed it forever.

Cyrus, the comedy drama with John C. Reilly, Catherine Keener, Maria Tomei, and Jonah Hill, starts at the Mayan Theatre July 2. The award winning independent film looks at the rocky relationship between two people when Reilly begins dating Tomei, and her son, played by Hill, has some odd mannerisms and doesn’t want Reilly in his life. Harry Brown is moving out of the Mayan as a result, so you have until July 1 to catch this intense and gritty British film.
I am Love, starring Academy Award Winning actress Tilda Swinton, comes to the Esquire Theatre beginning July 2. The film festival favorite has created a lot of critical buzz as the character driven piece centers around a wealthy family going through massive change.
Ondine begins showing July 2 at the Greenwood Village. Colin Farrell stars as a fisherman who literally catches a woman in his nets. When his daughter helps the mysterious woman regain her health, the father and daughter begin to wonder if fantasy can truly find reality.
The City of Your Final Destination hits the Chez Artiste Theatre beginning July 2 as well. The film looks at an academic, played by Omar Metwally, who seeks to write an autobiography of an infamous writer. He faces challenges and differentiating opinions from the people who were closest to the deceased writer, some of whom are played by Anthony Hopkins and Laura Linney.
Finally, Midnight Madness brings an incomparable classic, Casablanca, for a two night engagement. Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman solidified their status in what has been deemed one of, if not the, best film of American cinema. The movie shows at midnight for two nights only, July 2 and 3, at the Esquire Theatre.
