Sendak and Jonze talk 'Wild Things'

In this charming featurette from CinemaBlend, Where The Wild Things Are author Maurice Sendak talks candidly about the transformation his book has gone through over the years. Originally not well-received, Where The Wild Things Are went from being a banned book that not even librarians would recommend to a beloved children’s classic and a hotly anticipated motion picture.

“Maurice Sendak was involved in every aspect of [the film],” proclaims David Eggers, co-writer of the upcoming film. “Maurice really trusted Spike [Jonze, the director] to be the one to do the book justice.” Sendak confesses to numerous proposals over the years from filmmakes who were interested in the film but “who did not interest me.” He clearly does not have this issue with Jonze.

Sendak practically gushes over Jonze and his talent and vision for the film, which he calls “brilliant, modern,” and “fantastical”; Jonze, in turn, shows a deep respect for Sendak and his creation, as well as a desire to bring his own unique style to the film.

Where The Wild Things Are is set for release in October 2009. It stars Max Records as the young boy Max and boasts a star-packed roster of voice talent, including James Gandolfini and Forest Whitaker.
