Surely the movie industry knows that Halloween is NEXT weekend right? Apparently not, because this weekend we have three horror films going up against each other. The terrifyingly terrific Paranormal Activity is finally opening bid this weekend at 1,945 theaters. Last weekend, it made a monstrous $19 million in only 760 theaters. Expect that number to increase come Sunday.
And if it's Halloween, it must be SAW. Saw what? Well, going by its roman numerals, its numero six. But it feels like sixty to me. These things really need to get better screenwriters. Or better yet, stop altogether. Still, these torture porn entries still bring in the green, and it won't be any different this weekend.
The third "horror" film, if you even want to call it that, is Paul Weitz's "The Vampire Assistant." Hopeful to grab the attention of fans of the ridiculously overhyped vampire phenomenon, the movie is hoping to at least open north of $10 million.
But the two films to focus on this weekend are Paranormal Activity and Saw VI. I think this will be a very heated competition, one that may come down to a photo finish. I wish Where the Wild Things Are would stay #1 (because it deserves to be the biggest movie of the year), but realistically, this weekend is about where the horror movies are.
1.) Paranormal Activity ($29 million)
I think it's finally going to happen. For the first time since the original in 2004, a Saw film won't open to at least $30 million. Paranormal is experiencing a mindblowing run. And most impressively, it hasn't even had its highest weekend yet. Look for this one to flirt with $30 million.
2.) Saw Vi ($25 million)
This film is going to make money whether you like it or not. But it will be the lowest growwing film of the franchise. Perhaps this is why Lionsgate is making Saw VII (yes, there will be a seventh, possibly an eighth) a 3-D picture. It brings in those who are tricked by their friends to see a movie with flying visuals. That's how I saw The Final Destination this summer. True story. Saw VI opens to $25 million.
To round up the top 5:
3.) Where the Wild Things Are ($19 million)
4.) The Vampire's Assistant ($11 million)
5.) Astro Boy ($10 million)
