Randy Quaid was arrested today in the West Texas town of Marfa for leaving a San Ysidro, California, hotel without paying a $10,000 bill.  His wife of 30 years, Evi Quaid, a former Helmut Newton model, was also arrested, and they face felony charges of burglary, defrauding an innkeeper and conspiracy.

Each posted bail late Thursday after being held for several hours in the Presidio County jail.  In California, Santa Barbara County's sheriff's spokesman Drew Sugars stated the warrant for Quaid and his wife set bail at $20,000 each.  Presidio County Sheriff Danny Dominguez told The Associated Press he drove the actor to a bank to obtain the bail money.

Randy Quaid is a native Texan and the older brother of actor Dennis Quaid.  Ironically, he starred in a 1999 movie called The Debtors, directed by his wife Evi.  (She is the second woman in history to direct her husband in a feature film; the first was Ida Lupino.)  The Debtors was ultimately banned from release, but Ms. Quaid set legal precedent to preserve filmmaker’s rights to protect his or her creative property from financier interference.

Marfa, Texas, a non-descript town of 2.100, is no stranger to the Hollywood spotlight.  Filmmaker George Stevens chose the area for Giant, his epic Texas oil tale (starring Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean), and he won the 1957 best director Oscar for the movie.  In recent years, There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men were also filmed in Marfa, a town that was originally founded as a railroad stop in 1883.

I'd never heard of Marfa, Texas which seems to have quite an impact on the film business.

Would have been cheaper to just pay the inkeeper in the first place.

Debi, they are filming in the Pinnacles right now. I got ran out. LOL Big secret with the signs pointing to the location all over the highway. When are you coming toward DV? Winter here is great. I guess they did get a lot of attention over the arrest etc. and the hotel all over the news.

This is a 98% Hispanic community throughout the community with about 10 arrests per year that receives staggering funding for boarder protection yet, makes about 10 arrests per year. Mostly anglo outsiders.

  • Mara is great :) cool Marfa spooky lights. but what's up with the arresting deal? Is he broke?
