Summer outdoor films and tattoos

Washington Monument
Washington Monument

The D.C. area is a great place for outdoor movies in the summertime. They usually show older films which were mainstream at the time or classics. But it can be a very fun way to spend a cheap evening, especially if the weather is nice and the Washington humidity does not make you want to kill the person next to you.

Last night I went to a Rosslyn park in Arlington, Virginia to see the Karate Kid. It was a beautiful night and the park was jam packed with people on their blankets and folding chairs. The film was just as entertaining as I remembered it, with Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) growing up, falling in love and learning how to defend himself against the rich bullies. My only complaint, then and now, was that too many films of the eighties were formula driven and predictable. The love interest always pins a blue collar or poor family character with a rich Hollywood type. It is a romance of class conflict - and the wealthy are always jerks. The other annoyance in Arlington is too little parking space, with the exception of the limited, tiny garages.

As disappointing as my week has been, I decided to be bold and explore the mysterious world of tattoos for really no apparent reason at all. A close friend tried to talk me out of it (bless her heart), but when I am both stubborn and stupid, I can be very focused. I went into Rick's Tattoos this morning, again in Arlington. But I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for, perhaps because I had no clue what I was looking for. Sensing my altogether stupidity, they promptly kicked me out.

Otherwise, it's been a fun weekend so far.
