The trial for custody of the late Michael Jackson's children has happened like it was scheduled. Katherine Jackson, Michael Jackson's mother, won. She has been a constant for Michael Jackson, even throughout a turbulent career and personal life. Debbie Rowe, Michael Jackson's second wife, on the other hand, has kept her distance from the Jackson family, including the children, since the divorce in 1999. California divorce attorney Stacy Phillips stated about Katherine Jackson, "These kids love their grandmother. She's been in their lives."
This, however, is a ruling Debbie Rowe and other people may challenge in the future. The two older children, Michael Joseph Jackson Jr. and Paris-Michael Katherine Jackson, were born when Rowe was still married to their father, making her their legal mother. Rower reportedly signed away her parental rights to the children after the divorce, but an appeals court reestablished her parental status in 2006. California attorney Gloria Allred commented, "Katherine would have to show it would be detrimental to the kids for Rowe to have custody. That's a very heavy burden."
Michael Jackson's will is expected to be filed in a California court this week, and it could reveal his last wishes for his children. However, Allred also admitted those wishes would not be legally binding and only a "factor."
