Here’s the rundown on the new DVDs out this Tuesday, including everything from street fighters to the Jonas Brothers:
“Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li”: Based on a popular video game franchise and directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak, the film follows the adventures of Chun Li (Kristin Kreuk), a young woman who is not only a talented concert pianist but also a fighter. When she was a child, her home was attacked and her father kidnapped by thugs. As an adult, she receives a scroll written in an ancient Chinese language, leading her on a quest to find her father, who is being kept as a slave. Runtime: 96 minutes. Rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and martial arts action, and some sensuality.
“Two Lovers”: This drama from writer/director James Gray stars Joaquin Phoenix in possibly his final film performance as Leonard Kraditor, a lonely and depressed man who moves back in with his parents, only to find himself torn between two women: one the good-girl daughter of one of his family’s close friends (Vinessa Shaw), the other the somewhat eccentric and morally loose new neighbor (Gwyneth Paltrow). Runtime: 110 minutes. Rated R for language, some sexuality and brief drug use.
“Jonas Brothers: The Concert Experience”: Directed by Bruce Hendricks, this film features concert footage from the Jonas Brothers’ Burning Up concert tour, combined with looks behind-the-scenes and scenes from the hectic lives of the popular boy band. The film also features appearances by other popular young musicians like Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato. Runtime: 76 minutes. Rated G.
“12 Rounds”: This action film directed by Renny Harlin stars wrestler John Cena as Detective Danny Fisher, who finds out that an ex-convict from his past has kidnapped his girlfriend. To save her, he will have to successfully complete twelve challenges. Runtime: 108 minutes. Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action.
“The Education of Charlie Banks”: In this drama directed by Fred Durst, Jesse Eisenberg stars as Charlie Banks, a college student who, as a kid, witnessed his friend Mick (Jason Ritter) get into a fight that almost left two teens dead. Charlie told the police what he saw, and when he encounters Mick at his college, he has no idea if Mick knows he told on him or not. Mick acts likes a model student, but hiding his past turns out to be not as easy as he thinks it will be. Runtime: 100 minutes. Rated R for pervasive language, some violence, sexual content, and drug and alcohol use.
