Box Office Report - November 20-22

According to boxofficemojo.com, the estimated top earner for this past weekend, to no one’s surprise, was The Twilight Saga: The New Moon with a huge $140.7 million haul. After breaking records for midnight screenings and one-day gross, New Moon slowed down slightly but still had the third highest opening weekend in history, behind only Spider-man 3 and The Dark Knight. New Moon also doubled up on its predecessors first three days out from a year ago when Twilight earned $69.6 million.

Coming in strong at second was The Blind Side with Sandra Bullock with $34.5 million. That beats the star’s highest debut, this summer’s The Proposal and goes a long way to a possible Oscar campaign.

Falling from last week’s top spot to third was 2012, which lost nearly 60% of its audience ($26.5 million this weekend, $108.2 million overall).

The only other new entry into the top 10 was the animated picture Planet 51. The $12.6 million gross is decent but a no-show compared to other mega-hits of the 2009 like Up or even Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

In fifth was A Christmas Carol ($12.2 million this weekend, $79.8 million overall). Expanding its theater count and continuing to draw big crowds was Precious in sixth ($11 million this weekend, $21.4 million overall). The Men Who Stare at Goats came in seventh ($2.8 million this weekend, $27.6 million overall). Eighth belonged to Couples Retreat ($1.9 million this weekend, $105 million overall). The Fourth Kind hung around in ninth ($1.7 million this weekend, $23.3 million overall). Rounding out the top 10 was Law Abiding Citizen ($1.6 million this weekend, $70 million overall).

Outside of the top 10, Fantastic Mr. Fox continued to great business in its last days of limited release and made $199,000 on just four screens, while elsewhere Pedro Almodovar’s Broken Embraces earned $108,000 on only two.
