The corner store of Corner Store
In the Big City, it is the common corner store that ties neighborhoods together. A one-stop-shop for everything from malt likker to cat litter, entire communities and families co-exist and interact in and around these commerical oasises.
It is fitting, then, that the non-descript convenience store at Church and Market is the home of one man's quest for to retain a sense of home and place while his family remains thousands of miles away in Palestine
San Francisco-based filmmaker Katherine Bruens started shooting what looked to be a basic local interest film but then turned into a larger, more vital and important study of life in today's Palestine and the journey to rebuild a family.
Through this journey, the film explores the complex themes of cultural identity, the difficulties of legal immigration, and economic isolation. It strives to inspire empathy, build awareness, and increase understanding—compelling viewers to consider their own assumptions and biases; reflect on how they relate to their neighborhoods and larger communities; and imagine how to consciously live life in a real and significant way.
The film has even spawned a campaign called The Corner Campaign which seeks to address "...deeper community relationships, encourage cultural acceptance, advance understanding about immigration, and promote political participation."
