'New Moon' gobbles up $66.3 million

SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT

Summit Entertainment's “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” retained the top spot at the box office over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend, earning an additional $66.3 million. That figure brings the movie's two-weekend total to about $230.9 million.

The second installment of the film series based on Stephanie Meyer's novels picks up as vampire Edward Cullen (Robbert Pattinson) abandoning Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) in an effort to protect her from the dangers inherent in his world. Edward's absence leads Bella to a life of risky behavior and sends her straight into the arms of werewolf Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner).

Warner Bros. Pictures' “The Blind Side” actually increased its ticket sales this weekend, earning about $57.5 million over the five days in second-place. Its new total rests at about $100.2 million. Sandra Bullock portrays Leigh Anne Tuohy, a woman who takes in a homeless African American teenager named Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron). As Michael overcomes his past, he excels on the football field to eventually become an All-American offensive left tackle.

Columbia Pictures' “2012” remained in third-place with about $25.2 million over the Thanksgiving holiday. Its three-weekend total comes to about $138.5 million. Consistent with real Mayan prophecy, planetary alignment brings about global cataclysm in the movie, which features John Cusak, Amanda Peet, Danny Glover, Woody Harrelson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandie Newton and Oliver Platt.

Walt Disney Pictures' “Old Dogs” was the only newcomer to break the top five. It came in at fourth-place with about $24.2 million. The movie stars Rob Williams and John Travolta as a pair of best friends whose lives are turned upside down when they are unexpectedly charged with the care of six-year-old twins while on the verge of the biggest business deal of their lives. The bachelors stumble in their efforts to take care of the twins, leading to one debacle after another.

Walt Disney Pictures' “A Christmas Carol,” in which Jim Carrey portrays Ebenezer Scrooge, stuffed about $22.1 million into its stocking this weekend in fifth-place. Its total take so far is now about $104.9 million. Scrooge resigns himself to a grave Christmas until the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come take him on an eye-opening journey.

Rounding out this weekend's top 10 were Warner Bros. Pictures' “Ninja Assassin” ($21.2 million), TriStar Pictures' “Planet 51” ($13.9 million), Twentieth Century Fox's “The Fantastic Mr. Fox” ($9.4 million), Lionsgate Films' “Precious” ($2.2 million) and Overture Films' “The Men Who Stare at Goats” ($2 million).
