Julie and Julia is an intriguing new release that explores the power of cooking and positive thinking. It examines two women similar in name and their life's passions.
The story concerns Julia Child's (Meryl Streep) arrival in 1949 Paris with her husband Paul (Stanley Tucci, who also co-starred with Streep three years earlier in Devil Wears Prada). Julia, while always seemingly happy, struggles to find what she loves doing in Paris and ultimately decides to be a cook.
The other part of the story concerns Julie Powell (Amy Adams) and begins in 2002. Julie works a high-stress job in an office. She turns to Julia Child's cookbook and immerses herself in trying recipes she never had before.
Meryl Streep proves reliable again and makes you feel like you are actually watching Julia Child. Amy Adams is equally funny as a determined young female striving to achieve a lofty goal. Stanley Tucci, as Julia's husband Paul, may not share top billing, but his performance is as equally powerful as the two female leads.
The movie also has many memorable scenes. In one, Streep has to improve her onion cutting skills so she cuts so many there is a pile of them on the table. Another clever scene involves Adams having to cook a lobster. This amusing and clever scene features the song, Psycho Killer by the Talking Heads in the background. Order up!
