Believe it or not, you actually have to go back to 1995 to find the last time Jim Carrey released a comedy during the highly competitive summer movie season. This year though he returns to the fray with “Mr. Popper’s Penguins,” and based on the just released trailer, the actor should have no problem fitting back into the mix.
While Carrey debuted as a comedic actor, he’s shown the ability to shine as a dramatic actor as well. Although it seems his loyal fans (and the box office in general) overwhelming prefers when he just makes them laugh and that’s what he intends to do with “Penguins.” Based on the 1939 Newberry Award winning book, the movie follows a man who inherits a group of penguins, which in turn creates chaos in his life.
Though the movie, which co-stars Carla Gugino, Angela Lansbury, Phillip Baker Hall and James Tupper, will keep the central premise, the new footage shows the plot will be slightly updated. In the book, Carrey’s character Mr. Popper is a modest house painter, who after writing to one of his globe-trotting explorer icons is sent a group of penguins. Here, Carrey is now a successful (i.e. rich) businessman who inherits six penguins that eventually overtake his life and cause his loved ones to question his sanity.
In all honestly, it seems like Carrey’s sanity being questioned is a running theme with all of his characters, but there is no denying it works! Wiith the appeal of Carrey and director Mark Waters’ track record with kid-targeted movies (i.e. “Mean Girls,” & “Freaky Friday”), FOX looks to have a summer hit in the making.
“Mr. Popper’s Penguins” hits theaters June 17th.
