Here is the list of ten nominees for "Best Picture" at the 82nd annual Academy Awards. The Oscar ceremony will air on ABC on March 7th.
Avatar - Visually amazing and truly like nothing you've ever seen before, Avatar's story is lacking and cliched at best, and Cameron fails to write characters that get you emotionally involved enough to truly care. However, in IMAX 3-D, it is an experience you will never forget!
Hurt Locker - This nearly perfect war epic is "well-acted, intensely shot, and action filled." Like Jarhead or Blackhawk Down? You’ll love this! And so do the award voters.
Inglorious Basterds - Brad Pitt is hilarious, eccentric and award-worthy as usual - but the unknown and multilingual Christoph Waltz is the real scene stealer in this gory Tarantino film with typically lengthy, suspenseful and completely captivating dialogue.
Precious - A stark and brutally realistic story about life in the inner-city with a monstrous villain and powerful performances that is actually so hard to watch, it's worth watching.
Up in the Air - An Oscar level performance from the eccentric yet charming Clooney as Ryan Bingham, a businessman on the verge of reaching five million frequent flyer miles who falls for a fellow frequent flyer played by The Departed's Vera Farmiga.
Up - Up was the first real shot at a Best Picture nomination (not just Best Animated Picture -- which should be a lock) for Pixar. Up is not just an animated film for children and Pixar fans, it's a thoroughly entertaining adventure for all movie-goers.
The Blind Side - The Blind Side is about the remarkable true story about Michael Oher, a homeless boy turned first-round NFL draft pick, and though the script is not nearly as impressive as the true story, Sandra Bullock turns in the performance of a lifetime in what should be real chance at an Oscar nomination.
District 9 - "Intelligent film" is a term used to widely, this sci-fi action thriller is as in-your-face as it is stylish, while still trusting us to be "intelligent" enough to fill in some the blanks. District 9 brilliantly revives a dying and overdone genre of film that not only gives hope to die-hard "SyFy" geeks but will also bring new fans to the genre. One can only hope Neill Blomkamp will get a chance to actually make the film adaptation of the Halo video game.
An Education - Author Nick Hornby (best known for the novels High Fidelity, About a Boy and for the football memoir Fever Pitch) wrote the screenplay for this romantic comedy about a woman who meets an older man (Peter Sarsgaard) and gives up an Oxford education.
A Serious Man - The latest Cohen brothers film closely related to their own small-town Jewish background is not only one of their best, but hands-down of the best comedies of the year.
