Rent the Walter Matthau original instead.
Not sure which movie to see this week in theaters? Let me help you out. The following is a list of films playing in the majority of theaters around the nation. But don't waste your time seeing many of the newest films this weekend. If you haven't seen the top 3 yet start there and work your way down:
1. Up - See-it - By far the best film in theaters and the first real shot at a Best Picture nomination (not just Best Animated Picture -- which should be a lock) for Pixar. Up is not just an animated film for children and Pixar fans, it's a thoroughly entertaining adventure for all movie-goers. As of now, almost half way through the year, Up is the best picture of 2009.
2. The Hangover - See-it - Carried by hilarious performances by the three leading roles, The Hangover sets the bar at an all-time high for bachelor party movies. It will define comedy for a generation like Animal House did for the Boomers.
3. Star Trek - See-it - This witty, sexy and violent film is truly the first Star Trek film for everyone. Even after 2 hours and 6 minutes, Trekkies and newbies alike will walk out wanting more - which inevitably will come in just a few years time following an $80 opening weekend.
4. Moon - See-it if you can - Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey star in the relatively unknown film about an Astronaut living on the far side of the moon.
5. Drag Me To Hell - See-it - Finally, a horror movie worth freaking out over in 2009. Scary as hell and full of fun, Sam Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell is a must-see, campy (not to be confused with Cabin Fever campy) and gory masterpiece.
6. Food, Inc. - Rent-it - Another film like Fast Food Nation that will have you shopping in the organic and healthy food aisles of the supermarket for weeks.
7. Angels & Demons - Rent-it - This sequel was highly anticipated due to the popularity of the book, but unfortunately this literature doesn't translate to film as well The Da Vinci Code.
8. Flicker - Rent-it – An interesting story a man’s amazing dream machine, a drug-free way to achieve altered states of mind through dancing pulses of light.
9. Terminator Salvation - Rent-it - Better special effects but a less interesting story than the originals -- and surprisingly, not much better acting. "Are your professional or not?!"
10. Street Dreams - Rent-it - Rob Dyrdek, from MTV's hit reality show Rob & Big, co-star and co-wrote this story about the teenage skateboarding culture.
11. The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 - Skip-it - Despite Denzel and Travolta's usual draw there seems to be a lack of interest in this remake of the much better original of the same name.
12. Imagine That - Skip-it - If you've come to expect these family comedies starring Eddie Murphy to fall short every time you shouldn't open a 1-800 fortune-telling hotline, they truly are always terrible!
13. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian - Skip-it - Unless you are a huge Ben Stiller fan in need of a fun family film this holiday weekend.
14. Land of the Lost - Skip-it - Even Will Ferrell die-hards and fans of the TV series won't laugh very often at this horrible spoof.
15. My Life in Ruins - Skip-it - This film about has lost her kefi (Greek for "mojo") is one of the worst movies of all time!
