Funny People is more than the trailer depicts.
Not sure which movie to see this week in theaters? Let me help you out. The following is a list of films playing in the majority of theaters around the nation, including the superb result of a Judd Apatow and Adam Sandler pairing, as well as an eye-opening documentary that's the perfect precursor to the Discovery Channel's Shark Week:
1. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - See-it - Though Harry Potter races through each memorable moment in the book, it does so while remaining true to the story, superbly entertaining, and completely comprehensible.
2. Funny People - See-it - Judd Apatow's most mature film to-date wavers in the second half from being his usual always-hysterical comedy to a touching story about growth and realization.
3. 500 Days of Summer - See-it - Rarely do you find a romantic comedy that feels like it could actually happen to you, but 500 Days of Summer plays out like every relationship you've ever had; however, managing to remain completely intriguing along the way.
4. The Cove - See-it if you can - A rousing documentary which ghastly depicts the secret slaughtering of dolphins in Japan.
5. Bruno - See-it - Hilarious, offensive, insightful, crude and unbelievable - these words simultaneously describe Sasha Baron Cohen's latest character and film, Bruno, the newest "mockumentary" from the man who redefined the word in 2006 with Borat.
6. Away We Go - See-it - From the director of American Beauty, Away We Go stars Jim from The Office and Maya from SNL in one of the most sincere films about the ups & downs of relationships of all time.
7. Public Enemies - See-it - Depp plays Dillinger perfectly and Mann's Tommy-gun-blasting-vintage-car-chase action sequences are top notch (as expected), but Bale falls short with little to work with in this generally lacking dramatic story.
8. Orphan - See-it - The ending truly is the most shocking twist since The Sixth Sense, and the kid is just as creepy as Samara from The Ring.
9. Not Quite Hollywood - See-it if you can - A tribute to the b-movie era of fast-paced action, gory horror and soft-core sex romps.
10. The Collector - Rent-it - Fans of Saw (especially the original) will be more than pleasantly surprised with what they've done with this new suspenseful plot and horrifying story.
Other Films that Didn't Make the Top Ten:
In the Loop - See-it if you can - In the Loop is the Spinal Tap of the Iraq war era.
My Sister's Keeper - Rent-it - If you are in the mood for a heart-wrenching story about two young sisters facing some very grown-up decisions.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - Rent-it - Like everyone has said and heard: It was super racist, raunchy, long and cheesy. But giant robots fighting to the "death" Michael-Bay-style is always totally rad.
Shrink - Skip-it - Kevin Spacey is a shrink in a crisis himself in yet another overly melodramatic film that fails to uplift.
The Ugly Truth - Skip-it - Gerard Butler (300) does his best to keep The Ugly Truth afloat, but Heigl and the un-inspired plot are constantly bringing it back down.
G-Force - Skip-it - Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer is an interesting combination that results in a far from interesting story or characters.
Aliens in the Attic - Skip-it - Three signs you shouldn't see a film: Studio changes the name to pull in any whining-begging kids that can read (was originally titled They Came From Upstairs); directors last film was a disaster (John Shultz's The Honneymooners); and studio won't let press see it early.
