See-it, rent-it, skip-it: top 10 movies in theaters Friday, August 14th

District 9 is finally open to the public.

Not sure which movie to see this week in theaters? Let me help you out. The following is a list of films playing in the majority of theaters around the nation, including 3 films that very well may make my top 10 of the year list:

1.  Ponyo - See-it if you can - You've never heard of it because I hadn't, but Ponyo, a story inspired by The Little Mermaid from Academy Award-winning Japanese animation director Miyazaki, is one the best animated fairy tales ever made!

2.  District 9 - See-it - "Intelligent film" is a term used to widely, this sci-fi action thriller is as in-your-face as it is stylish, while still trusting us to be "intelligent" enough to fill in some the blanks. District 9 brilliantly revives a dying and overdone genre of film that not only gives hope to die-hard "SyFy" geeks but will also bring new fans to the genre.

3.  A Perfect Getaway - See-it - A Perfect Getaway is a perfect campy b-movie horror film with an unpredictabale act 3 twist and red herrings galore.

4.  Funny People - See-it - Judd Apatow's most mature film to-date wavers in the second half from being his usual always-hysterical comedy to a touching story about growth and realization.

5.  Julie & Julia - See-it - If you're looking for charismatic, light-hearted entertainment Julie & Julia is the culinary comedy you're looking for. Meryl Streep will be all the talk again this award season.

6.  Bruno - See-it - Hilarious, offensive, insightful, crude and unbelievable - these words simultaneously describe Sasha Baron Cohen's latest character and film, Bruno, the newest "mockumentary" from the man who redefined the word in 2006 with Borat.

7.  Orphan - See-it - The ending truly is the most shocking twist since Sixth Sense, and the kid is just as creepy as Samara from The Ring.

8.  Bandslam - See-it - If you are a young teenager this may be your favorite film of the year, but for others Bandslam is surprisingly an intelligent, entertaining musical drama with zero teen-film cliches.

9.  Paper Heart - Rent-it - Paper Heart is a partially scripted film about a documentary about love that tests the boundaries of story-telling in an intriguing and delightful fashion.

10.  G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra - Rent-it - Despite every early review in anticipation of horrid cartoonish performances, G.I. Joe is an action-packed summer blockbuster and better than expected.

Other Films In Theaters that Didn't Make the Top Ten:

The Collector - Rent-it - Fans of Saw (especially the original) will be more than pleasantly surprised with what they've done with this new suspenseful plot and horrifying story.

The Ugly Truth - Skip-it - Gerard Butler (300) does his best to keep The Ugly Truth afloat, but Heigl and the un-inspired plot are constantly bringing it back down.

Cold Souls - Skip-it - Paul Giamatti's attempt at Being John Malkovich falls short in every category besides bordeom.

G-Force - Skip-it - Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer is an interesting combination that results in a far from interesting story or characters.

The Time Traveler's Wife - Skip-it - Unless you read the book, this story will feel completely contrived and illogical.

The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard - Skip-it - The Goods is as bad as it gets, despite the mass amount of talent behind and in front of the camera.

Spread - Skip-it - You care less about Ashton Kutcher in this film than you do in real life.
