A bootleg copy of the trailer for J.J. Abrams' new film Super 8 has now found its way to the internet, after premiering in front of Iron Man 2. And much like his initial trailers for Cloverfield, this trailer doesn't really tell us much of anything, other than that Abrams has a monster movie coming out. And while the trailer may lead people to believe that Super 8 may be filmed the same way that Cloverfield was, over on the Hollywood Reporter, they are stating that this will not be the case. Anyone who left the theater after watching Cloverfield feeling rather motion sick (as well as those that think the movies filmed with hand-helds are getting rather gimmicky) will certainly be glad of that news.
The Hollywood Reporter is also stating that, "What [the trailer] doesn't let anyone in on is the plot of the movie or the rest of the context that we had heard actually generated the idea. Namely, the possibility that a group of kids in 1979 are playing around making movies with their Super 8 cameras (as Abrams and Spielberg did as kids) and accidentally capture something ... sinister, on film." But at this point, with Abrams' track record of keeping everything very close to the vest, the speculation that this film may center around a group of kids who accidentally film an alien is nothing more than speculation (and may have nothing to do with what actually ends up in the film itself).
And over on Vulture, they are stating that "like Spielberg’s Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and E.T., the project will deal with everyday people whose personal relationships are tested when they are thrown up against extraordinarily fantastic — and possibly otherworldly — events." This makes it sound almost as if the film won't really be about the monster aspect at all, and will be more about the people involved (who are trying to deal with the repercussions of what they have seen). Perhaps this means that we will see very little of the monster? This might work out better for the film, as with Jaws, not seeing the shark made it that much more scary.
All that we can really say for sure is that the film is scheduled to be released in the summer of 2011.
