The box office report this week has a new champion at the top. Kid friendly animated movie 'How to Train Your Dragon' took the number 1 position at the box office this week with a hefty $43.3 Million. The movie has wowed audiences who love the movie, especially in 3D. The movie stars, well voice stars, Gerard Butler, America Ferrera, Craig Ferguson and Jay Baruchel. This movie is also being enjoyed by adults and kids alike so it has a huge audience.
'Alice in Wonderland' came in 2nd this week with $17.3 Million. The Tim Burton directed and Disney flick has done extremely well and is well received by most critics. The darker look at 'Alice in Wonderland' is a different tale to Lewis Carroll's beloved book but stars Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham-Carter, Anne Hathaway and more help to make this movie a brilliant success.
'Hot Tub Time Machine' came in 3rd place this week with $13.6 Million which is very good for a movie a lot of people hadn't heard of. I personally thought the trailer was OK but not to my tastes but Jim Dixon, the Capital District Movies Examiner, seemed to enjoy the movie. See his review HERE.
Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston's, 'The Bounty Hunter' stayed steady coming in with $12.4 Million to take the 4th spot at the box office. The romantic comedy has been dissed by critics but I thought it was ok it didn't sizzle sizzle sizzle, but it was cute. See my review here.
Rounding out the top 5 is 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' which brought in an even $10 Million. I've read the books and saw the movie and thought the movie was well done and kids absolutely adore it. I am sure we will see the next 'Diary' books made into movies soon. Way to go Jeff Kinney, the author of the series.

Dragons was very good, but I wonder how it will do against "Clash of the Titans." "Clash of The TItans" will open in 3D as well so I am worried for Dragons numbers.
I saw Hot Tub Time Machine and I wanted my money back. It is so stupid and unfunny and often vulgar, gross and juvenile at best. I was more than disappointed. I would give it an F+..the plus is just for the 80's clothes! Saw Repo Men too..uh, it get's a "D+"..not sure why so many bad movies are being made..blah!lol
What's this ugly rumor about 3D ticket prices going up ten percent, to $15 or $20 a seat? How does Hollywood expect to pack them in if they do things like that?
alice in wonderland was my favorite as a child
Ha ha -- Slays. I am looking forward to seeing this.
I haven't seen the new Alice, but plan to.
I'd like to see Dragons. The trailer I saw last week looked fun.
I want to see the new Alice as well.
Here's the "Dragon" irony. Despite delivering a 3D enhanced number, the industry perspective is it should have actually done better. The studio was hoping for a $50 million+ weekend. Will word of mouth and school holidays lend a hand? It's a very entertaining film, perhaps the closest to Pixar's deft touch we've seen in a while. I hope it does manage to take flight.
Two movies I don't want to see.
It's so interesting how the animated and 3D movies are doing well now.
Alice was enjoyable, but neither my husband nor I fell in love with it. I've yet to decide if I want to see Dragon in the theater or wait until it's on DVD.

I'm with Sherri on this, why are so many bad movies voted great?
If it wins an academy, I usually don't like them.
Got something to say?
