With little competition “Avatar” rolled through the box office like it has for the past five weeks and took the number one spot yet again with a strong $41 million and averaged more than $12,000 per showing. The James Cameron epic is closing in on “The Dark Knight’s” $533.3 million all time grossing total with $491.7 million. According to Box Office Mojo,”Avatar” has a 29 day total of $460.9 million, while “The Dark Knight” has a 29 day total of $459.1 million. With yesterdays Golden Globe wins of Best Director (Drama) and Best Motion Picture (Drama) expect ticket sales to go up slightly.
Denzel Washington’s “The Book of Eli” posted strong numbers and took the number one spot on Friday with $11 million, but in the end it couldn’t strike down the giant as it finished the weekend with $30 million. Box Office Mojo reports that “The Book of Eli” is 20th among non number one debuts.
Paramount and Dreamworks’ “The Lovely Bones” opened at the number three spot with $17 million and saw a 44 percent jump in business since it opened in limited theaters on Christmas day.
“Alvin and the Chimpmunks: The Sqeuekuel” took the number four spot with $11.5 million. The film has a four-week total of $193 and is poised to become a part of the $200 million club.
Rounding out the top five is “Sherlock Holmes” with $9.8 million.
Jackie Chan’s “The Spy Next Door” also debuted this weekend with $9.7 million. The film suffered harsh reviews from critics and even spent some time in the zero percent range on the rotten tomato meter.
