'Alice in Wonderland' remains at number one at the weekend box office with $62 million

Disney's Alice in Wonderland

As expected Alice in Wonderland is number one at the weekend box office with $62 million averaging more than $16,000 per showing in over 3728 theaters. Even though the film dropped more than 50% in business, Alice in Wonderland continued to maintain its hold and took advantage of the fact that there were four films opening up this weekend. The film ranks fifth in all time 3D films. In ten days the film has grossed $208.6 million.

The Paul Greengrass thriller Green Zone starring Matt Damon failed to make it to the safe zone as the movie debuted in second place with $14.5 million and averaged $4,840 per showing in 3003 theaters. Mediocre reviews, Alice in Wonderland, and it opening the weekend with three other films may have contributed to the film’s box office results. It is reported that the film was made on a $100 million plus budget.

The romantic comedy She’s Out of My League took the number three spot with $9.6 million averaging $3,228 per showing in 2956 theaters.

Remember Me took the fourth spot with $8.2 million, averaging $2,309 per showing in 3,259 theaters. Considering it opened in more theaters than She’s Out of My League the film can be considered a flop.

At number five is Shutter Island with $8.1 million. The film has grossed $108 million in four weeks.

Be sure to check out the weekend top five every Sunday.  If you want to see these films at your local Los Angeles theater be sure to head over to the Fandango website.  Also for full box office results go to the box office mojo website.

I can't get over the fact that 'She's out of my league' did better than 'Remember Me', argh.
