Long Island Movie Examiner on the Academy Awards - Part 2: LiveExamining the Oscars

Newest entries are first.  Check out my predictions for the Oscars here.

11:53 PM: 4 for 8 - 4 for 9, really.  Good show, Slumdog Millionaire.  A great show, thanks for following along with me.

11:49 PM: Best Picture.  If you can remember, I called Slumdog Millionaire.  But I said that the Academy was going to split the difference between Milk and Slumdog, just like 2006 with Crash and Brokeback Mountain.

11:46 PM: See, Bill Maher?  This is how you share a point of view without being ridiculously smug.  You know you're in trouble when you can be taking lessons in tact from Sean Frickin' Penn.

11:43 PM: Bang, should've trusted my instinct on that one.  3 for 7.

Great start to his acceptance speech - turning FANTASTIC.

11:36 PM: Right into Best Actor?  Okay then, I called Mickey Rourke but I still wonder if Sean Penn's gonna pull off an upset.

11:34 PM: Oh man, that whistle from her father was PRICELESS.

11:32 PM: Holy cow, I actually got it right.  3 for 6!

11:26 PM: Best Actress.  I called Kate Winslet.  Melissa Leo fans should be psyched.

11:22 PM: WOW, classy acceptance speech.  I like how he mentioned the guy who choreographed the dance at the end of the movie but was left off the credits.

11:20 PM: Yep, Danny Boyle.  2 for 5.

11:19 PM: Okay, Best Director.  I called Gus Van Sant, but with the way it's going so far, I'm thinking it might end up being Danny Boyle.

11:17 PM: Very nice "In Memoriam" montage this year.  Very classy presentation, makes the previous years feel needlessly manipulative.  Bill Condon's done a GREAT job this year.

11:07 PM: Wow...I'm amazed that Waltz With Bashir didn't take this one based on how much love it got.

11:00 PM: Okay, seriously, singing "Down to Earth" OVER "Jai Ho" didn't work at all.

Oscar goes to..."Jai Ho".

10:58 PM: Again, Should Win: "Down to Earth".  Will Win: "Jai Ho".

I can understand not getting Peter Gabriel to sing the song, but this guy just isn't doing it justice.

10:54 PM: Yeah, he did a great score, but there was a point during the two movies I was pulling for where the music was playing during a scene and it absolutely killed me.  As good as the score was, Slumdog Millionaire had no such moments.

10:51 PM: I'm pulling for Wall-E or Milk for Best Score tonight, but I'm thinking that it goes to Slumdog Millionaire.

10:44 PM: And this is a bad time, but..."Don't Speak (I Came To Make A Bang)" by Eagles of Death Metal; "How We Operate" by Gomez.

10:42 PM: By the way - "The Dragster Wave" by Ghinzu; "Paralyzed" by Rock Kills Kid; "We Are Rockstars" by Does It Offend You, Yeah?.  Two to go.

Jerry Lewis gets the special award tonight!  Awesome!

10:38 PM: Can't comment on the sound awards, but Slumdog Millionaire earned it for Best Editing.

10:27 PM: Benjamin Button's old age makeup was computer effects?  Fooled me.

10:23 PM: Before this ceremony is over I will find five songs that would have been much better for this Action montage than the overplayed Tick Tick Boom.

10:14 PM: Man On Wire was apparently the heavy favorite, so no surprise here.

And somebody smack Bill Maher upside the head.  Not for the athiest stuff, just for coming off like a general pompous jerk.

10:08 PM: 2 for 4.  I like how Alan Arkin just didn't bother with the dramatic pause.

...This crowd is quiet, of course, but I've never imagined it being this kind of quiet.

Man.

10:02 PM: Time for Best Supporting Actor.  Like everyone else, I called this for Heath Ledger.

9:56 PM: Now this kind of musical interlude is more to my liking.  It's not setting my world on fire but I don't cringe listening to it.

9:45 PM: Ha!  Janusz Kaminski shot Apatow's next movie, Funny People.

9:42 PM: Here's our short film from Judd Apatow - not really doing anything for me, actually...although the arm around Rogen during Milk was hilarious.

9:38 PM: Slumdog Millionaire earned this one.  The dazzling visuals are usually the first thing you think of when you consider this movie, and they feel like a natural part of the whole package (as opposed to distracting and overly flashy).

9:32 PM: Okay, we're through the first hour.  I really enjoy this year so far, and while it feels slow, we've actually given out a third of the awards so far.  So it's working out great.

Man, we need to see this Ben Stiller more often.

9:26 PM: There's a structure to the montages this year that I appreciate.

That said, screw Twilight.  I was way too easy on it in my review.

9:23 PM: Makeup is going to Benjamin Button...I wish I got that in earlier so I could say I called it.

9:21 PM: Did not see The Duchess, cannot comment at all.

9:19 PM: I didn't like Benjamin Button, but giving it best art direction was a very good call - daunting task to design this movie, pulled off seamlessly.

9:15 PM: Oh, I get the format of this show - taking you through the actual production of a movie.  It helps people understand what kind of work goes into a movie.  VERY well played.

9:10 PM: Didn't see La Maison, but I'm glad this didn't go to Presto.  Hilarious cartoon, but I never thought of it as Oscar material.

9:06 PM: Good.  GOOD.  This should've been a Best Picture nominee.

9:03 PM: GREAT burn by Jack Black!  MAN.

Anyway, I'm pulling for Wall-E for Best Animated.  After how badly it got screwed in the Annie Awards, they better get some Academy love tonight.

9:01 PM: *phew* I was starting to feel embarassed for a second.  1 for 3.

8:59 PM: Now for Best Adapted Screenplay - I called Slumdog Millionaire.

8:57 PM: Dustin Lance Black.  I have a feeling that this is the beginning of an upset.  0 for 2.

8:55 PM: Best Original Screenplay - I called WALL-E.

8:47 PM: Holy God, Penelope Cruz.  I was WAY off base on this one.  I'm 0 for 1, I think I'm going 0 for 6 tonight.

And on a seperate note, this way of announcing the nominees is WAY too long.

8:44 PM: Are they handing out Best Supporting?  OK, I called Taraji P. Henson for this.  Let's see how this plays.

8:40 PM: Okay, I'm totally sold on it now.  And Jackman is KILLING this opening.

8:33 PM: Honestly, I was never a big fan of singing the nominees, and this isn't changing my mind, but the "cheap" theme is hilarious.

8:19 PM: Not much to say right now; I never pay much attention during the red carpet show.  I'll start this in earnest once the actual ceremony starts.

7:41 PM: Mel Gibson on Jimmy Kimmel tonight?  How slow am I that this is the first I'm hearing of this?

7:38 PM: I hope you guys are watching this Mickey Rourke interview.  This is fantastic stuff.

7:25 PM: Speaking of fantastic...Duplicity from Tony Gilroy.  Yes.

7:23 PM: I remember the SNL that Hathaway was on - VERY brave monologue.  What they didn't show was her launching into a bit about how she had moved on from her ex after meeting a Nigerian prince who needed some money to escape the country.  Anne Hathaway is fantastic - I hope I'm wrong about her chances tonight.

7:15 PM: Actually, listening to that interview, I'm curious to see what will become of them.  I thought Justin Timberlake was a flash in the pan while he was in NSync.  Now he puts on one of the greatest live shows in pop music today.

7:11 PM: The Barbra Walters special has started with a Jonas Brothers interview.  I'm not sure what The Jonas Brothers have to do with the Oscars, but their upcoming movie is going to be the greatest thing to happen to the concert film since The Last Waltz.
