DVD and Blu-ray releases for Tuesday, July 6th include the dramatic action film The Warlords starring Takeshi Kaneshiro, Andy Lau, and Jet Li. I reviewed the film way back in 2008 and have highly recommended it ever since. If you're a fan of any of the main actors in the film, martial arts films, or Chinese war films, then you should probably look into seeing this one. The bad news is that like with most other foreign films that make it to US shores, The Warlords has been edited and is missing 13-14 minutes from the original version. Special features look to be pretty slim, but the Blu-ray includes deleted scenes, making of featurettes, a production journal, a behind the scenes special, and the international trailer. Not sure how many of these features are on the DVD as Amazon doesn't list anything.
Some other releases you may want to look into include:
- A Single Man (drama, DVD / Blu-ray)
- Brooklyn's Finest (crime, drama, DVD / Blu-ray)
- The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (crime, thriller, DVD / Blu-ray)
All DVD and Blu-ray releases for the month of July and the foreseeable future can be viewed at ComingSoon.net.
If any new theatrical release this weekend can overthrow Eclipse, it'll probably be the animated comedy Despicable Me featuring the voices of Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Will Arnett, Danny McBride, Jemaine Clement, and Julie Andrews. The film revolves around Gru (Carell) and his quest to be the world's greatest supervillain. With the help of his minions, he sets his sights on stealing the moon. Getting in the way of his plans, however, are the three orphan girls who look to him as a potential father figure; Margo, Edith, and Agnes.
Also coming to theaters this Friday, July 9th is the sci-fi action film Predators. This is one of my most anticipated films of the year, so expect a review from me Friday or Saturday. Getting a limited theatrical run is the horror sequel [rec] 2. I saw this awhile back, as well. While I was disappointed with the first film, I thoroughly enjoyed the second. It's worth checking out if you're into horror movies like this.
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse dominated the box office this past weekend and kicked Toy Story 3 out of the number one spot. Here are the top ten at the box office for the weekend of July 2-5:

2. The Last Airbender
3. Toy Story 3 (REVIEW)
4. Grown Ups
5. Knight and Day
6. The Karate Kid
7. The A-Team
8. Get Him to the Greek (REVIEW)
9. Shrek Forever After
10. Cyrus
