"2012" starring John Cusack opens this weekend and the apocalyptic film, based on the Mayan calendar, has movie-goers wondering, "Is the world going to end in 2010?"
So why all the end-of-the-world hype?
The movie "2012" is based on the 'predictions' of the Mayan calendar. In response to all the 2012 buzz stirred up by the movie, NASA launched a FAQ page called "2012: Beginning of the End or Why the World Won't End" to handle all the rumors.
The Mayan Calendar
The ancient Mayans had an advanced understanding of mathematics, astronomy and writing. The Mayan "Long Count" calendar ends a 5,000 year cycle on December 21, 2012. According to some scholars, the end of a cycle was actually considered a time for a celebration rather than a doomsday warning.
On winter solstice in 2012, for the first time in approximately 26,000 years, the sun will come into alignment with the center of the Milky Way. Astronomers say it would have been impossible for the Mayans to know that.
Some believe the end of the Mayan calendar predicts a giant catastrophe that will end civilization as we know it while others predict it will be the end of a negative cycle and will begin the start of a new 'awakening.'
What the Mayans say
The Los Angeles Times interviewed a Mayan shaman/calendar keeper in Guatemala City just before the release of the "2012" movie. The shaman, Calixta Gabriel, said that the earth would suffer "hunger, wind and thunder" but said the prediction of the end of the world is an exaggeration.
Another 'calender keeper' Gregerio Chayax explained that the end of the Long Count calendar actually spans 40 years and right now, we are only halfway through. The calendar keeper told the journalist that "we are out of balance" and "we have become excessive in what we demand."

as long as the magnetic don't swap locations - I think we'll be OK. That whole alignment of the milky way and the earth and the sun is a little strange.
Actually you folks might want to check out Ed Dames (US Army Retired) former member of the Remote Viewer group (Project GrillFlame). Dames set up a company with some of his former group members who were reported to be among the shining stars of the RV community. Dames claims to have seen a series of huge solar eruptions that bombard the earth with high energy plasma that causes the type of proton and hardonic particles that are employed as a set piece of 2012. What is interesting is that he was apparently sued by someone to keep him from reevealing the information to the public. The group he formed was allegedly contracted by government agencies and insurance funds in an attempt to get a heads up to future disasters and bad thngs so they could allegedly prepare (e.g. raise rates or dump policy protection for areas at great risk. What is also interesting is that he claims in his DVD "Kill Shot" that others saw the coming disaster. One team member allegedly moved to Candad.

The movie is, of course, fiction. if anyone wants to explore the various 2012 prophecies and relevant science, they should check out all the History Channel programs on this subject and visit the 2012 section at thecityedition.com, which contains a fairly comprehensive compilation of articles and websites.
its a message that we should all start do the right thing in our life movie or not science or fiction thanks to the movie makers

whether its true or not, what's important is that we must always be ready! i dont know if it will really happen on december 21, 2012 but i do know 2 things that are for sure.... one. the day that the world will end will SURELY come. two. and that day, is near!

I saw that movie yesterday but a couple of years ago, when I 1st heard about the predictions of the Mayans nd Nostradamus I was so freaked out!!! But the truth is nobody knows nd the reason the government is trying so hard to prove these things false is bcuz they r scared themselves!!! Lets live today nd hope 4 a good tomorrow =) Much Love!
he says the world will end ,is it a documentry or entratainer 2012, he can show it free of cost because what he will do with the money he earned, after 2012 he will never live to enjoy the profits he earned on 2012 ?

Make up your minds. God can't be love one second and be hate and death the next. It's one or the other. Furthermore, he can't condone some of the stories in the Bible you people hold so dear if he's such a good guy. An awesome movie....Y cant It be real?????this increase in temperature in environment in recent years,gradual decrease in percentage of rainfall,melting north ploes,increasing water-level of oceans etc....aren`t de indicating someting????neways this is only 1 side of cause of destruction.....others like volcanos,eatrh-quakes etc or solar calamities cn b also reason....btw U shuld see 2012....

I have done some research on the Mayan Calendar and the predictions that Dec 21,2012 will be the end. I can only liken what I'm feeling to the days prior to Y2K, a little anxious and a little bit of dread. If this is to be the end then I guess that today is the moment to live life to the fullest and to make sure that you take a bite out of life each and every day. If you don't like your life, you are the only one that can change it. Know that you can change anything about your life that you want. Just think, if 2012 comes and goes and you're still here then you have just changed your life for the better.

This is how it goes... The Mayans Calendar is just a calendar for them, but for us, they are giving hints that there is a CYCLE. What is cycle suppose to be with this horrifying speculations the end of the world? Global warming, folks. Global warming and/or climate change is a cycle too. The Mayans knew this issue pretty well so they let next generations to think of the CYCLE nature. Sadly enough, 8th century Industrial Revolution makes climate change disaster much faster. Why there are so many nature disasters such as Sumatra Tsunami and Katrina hurricane lately? Think about that.
In my perspective, 2012 it's just The Beginning. We will be facing climate change much more extreme and nature disaster more often in Gregorian calendar's history. As a MUSLIM i can say that the end of this world will come i sware it will cuz ALLAH, in other words GOD, mentioned in the HOLY QURAN that this world will end one day but ofcourse nobody knows when it will happen only ALLAH knows and by that day oceans and seas will burn and becomes like hell n comets&stars will fall down over earth n the sun will be very close to earth that we r going to melt cuz of its heat n the sky will be coverd by black smoke and ofcouese the sun will rise from west in the end of the world and after 3 days we all go back to GOD >> there is a lot of other things will happen in the end of world things over our understanding u can find it in the HOLY qURAN
