The Boston Society of Film Critics were founded in 1981 to make "Boston's unique critical perspective heard on a national and international level by awarding commendations to the best of the year's films and filmmakers and local film theaters and film societies that offer outstanding film programming."
The last three winners of the Best Film award have all gone on to win the Oscar for Best Picture. "Slumdog Millionaire" in 2008, "No Country for Old Men" in 2007, "The Departed" in 2006. Additionally the Best Film award of 2005 was won by "Brokeback Mountain," a film that was widely expected to win the Best Picture but lost to "Crash" in one of the biggest upsets in Oscar history.
