Kathryn Bigelow’s intense Iraq war drama “The Hurt Locker” swept the awards handed out by the Boston Society of Film Critics Awards taking home five awards including Best Film, Best Actor for Jeremy Renner and Best Director for Bigelow.

Also winning were Meryl Streep as Best Actress for her performance as Julia Child in "Julie & Julia." Christoph Waltz was named Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Quentin Tarantino’s "Inglourious Basterds." Best Supporting Actress honors went to Mo’Nique for her role in "Precious."

The Coen brothers won the Best Screenplay award for "A Serious Man" and Pixar’s "Up" continued to dominate the critics awards by winning another Best Animated Film award.

The Boston Society of Film Critics were founded in 1981 to make "Boston's unique critical perspective heard on a national and international level by awarding commendations to the best of the year's films and filmmakers and local film theaters and film societies that offer outstanding film programming."

The last three winners of the Best Film award have all gone on to win the Oscar for Best Picture. "Slumdog Millionaire" in 2008, "No Country for Old Men" in 2007, "The Departed" in 2006. Additionally the Best Film award of 2005 was won by "Brokeback Mountain," a film that was widely expected to win the Best Picture but lost to "Crash" in one of the biggest upsets in Oscar history.
