There was a lot of anticipation for the concept of bringing Star Wars in Concert to life. Giving homage to the sights and sounds of what is arguably the most popular movie series of all time, Star Wars in Concert is a must-see for anybody who considers themselves a fan.
Before the concert began, the crowd was able to walk amongst the Palace concourse where real movie props were displayed. Characters from the series walked around as children (and adults) formed lines to take pictures. It was unclear if some of these costumed characters were actually part of the show, or just fans that showed up supporting their favorite movie. In either scenario, browsing around and reading the production notes attached to the various movie props was pretty interesting. Some of the props and layouts were pretty lame (real uniforms of the Naboo Security Guards!), but others were very cool to see in person (such as the Han Solo Carbonite.)
This all was, of course, just a prelude to the real event. Anthony Daniels, the legendary actor who played C-3PO, is there live in person to host the evening. Some of his readings were bland or over-dramatic, but he carries himself fully immersed in the show. You can truly get a sense that he loves being involved in Star Wars and that he truly gets it. There is a funny moment that takes place between him and the conductor of the orchestra.
The orchestra and the music are by far the stars of the show. By cutting together montages of clips from all 6 movies, Anthony Daniels tells the entire Star Wars story from start to finish, all set to the amazing, famous score by John Williams. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will blow you away even if you aren't familiar with the movies...To be a fan of Star Wars and to hear these songs live, is a breath-taking experience that will bring a tear to your eye.
A huge digital screen, laser lights, pyro-technics and special effects accompany the orchestra. Throughout, there is a great balance of humor, drama, and romance. This is definitely a family-friendly event. Just like you can't call yourself a Parrot-head if you haven't been to a Jimmy Buffett Concert, you are not a true fan of Star Wars until you have seen this live, unbelievable and memorable performance.
Tickets for Star Wars in Concert are still available in other parts of the nation. There is no word if the show will return to our area.
