It is "Oscar Nomination Eve", the day before the announcement of the nominations for the biggest award of them all. The 82nd Annual Academy Award Nominations will be televised tomorrow morning, 8:30 a.m. EST on E! Entertainment Television.
There are several front-runners such as Jeff Bridges (for Best Actor, Crazy Heart), Kathryn Bigelow (for Best Director, The Hurt Locker), Avatar (for Best Motion Picture), and Sandra Bullock (for Best Actress, The Blind Side.) But there seems to always be a few surprises, a few snubs, and a lot of movies and actors that gain late momentum (such as previous winners Shakespeare in Love and Slumdog Millionairre.)
For my money though, it is Inglourious Basterds that should gather nominations for Best Motion Picture, Best Director (Quentin Tarantino), and especially Best Supporting Actor (it would be a travesty if Christoph Waltz was not nominated in this category, although he is expected to be.) Tarantino deserves to be recognized for his brilliance, as did Scorcese. Just because he is expected to be brilliant with each movie doesn't take away from his achievement as one of the signature directors of our time.
The Best Motion Picture category has been expanded this year from 5 movies to 10, and I hope this allows for underdog movies such as The Hangover or (500) Days of Summer.
And although the movie Precious is expected to garner nominations for Mo'Nique and lead actress Gabourey Sidibe, it would be a tremendous surprise if Paula Patton was nominated for her role in the film. All three actresses deserve a nomination, but it was Patton's understated performance as Ms. Rain that would have my vote to win Best Supporting Actress.
