Star Wars: Episode I poster
“Every generation has a legend. Every journey has a first step. Every saga has a beginning.”
The # 7 film on the Top 10 Worst Movie Sequels of All Time list is Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. It’s hard to even know where to begin talking about where this movie went wrong. There’s no point in mocking it either since it does such a fine job mocking itself. Jake Lloyd, who played young Anakin Skywalker, said it best when he said that Star Wars: Episode I is “for children.” That really is the only explanation for the film. It was a kids’ movie wrapped in a Sci-fi setting. Throw in a little violence and story that was over the head of the kids and you get the final result: a movie that hits home with no audience.
Sure, the special effects were good, but that’s pretty much a given nowadays with big budget films. It’s not his fault, after all he was like 9 or 10 when filming, but Jake Lloyd as young Anakin Skywalker was flat out annoying. Had it not been for the Jar Jar Binks character taking annoyance to an even higher level, Lloyd would have been ragged on much harder than he was. You know you made a crappy movie with some horrible characters when every annoying character to ever follow is named after the one from your film. Such is the case with Jar Jar. How many times have you heard someone say, “He was like the Jar Jar Binks of [insert any movie title here].”
This film was so bad they decided to cast Hayden Christensen as the slightly older Anakin in the films to follow, and that was an improvement! But, hey, when you make over $430 million in U.S. box office sales and hold the # 6 spot on the all-time U.S. grossing list, who cares if it’s a horrible sequel (well, prequel technically)?
I would rather pour snow-cone syrup all over my body, knock over a giant fire ant hill and lay down on the ground than have to watch this movie again.
Plot
The evil Trade Federation, led by Nute Gunray is planning to take over the peaceful world of Naboo. Jedi's Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi are sent to confront the leaders. But not everything goes to plan. The two Jedis escape, and along with their new Gungan friend, Jar Jar Binks head to Naboo to warn Queen Amidala, but droids have already started to capture Naboo and the Queen is not safe there. Eventually they land on Tatooine, where they become friends with a young boy known as Anakin Skywalker. Qui-Gon is curious about the boy, and sees a bright future for him. The group must now find a way of getting to Coruscant and to finally solve this trade dispute, but there is someone else hiding in the shadows. Are the sith really extinct? Is the Queen who she really says she is? and what's so special about this young boy? (written by user simon on IMDB.com)
