Rain brings relief at Tuesday's Short Track at Papago race

All summer long, riders showing up for the Short Track at Papago races in Tempe haven't let 110-degree heat stop them from having fun. And they showed no mercy to a change of weather Aug. 17 that brought pouring rain, stiff winds and crackles of lightning. If anything, they welcomed the chance to get soaked by rain rather than sweat.

About 15 riders started the weekly social race, which has taken place this year every Tuesday since May 1. August 31 will be the last race of the year. The races start at the Papago Park foot bridge, usually around 6:30 p.m.

The Aug. 17 race started off with a casual half-lap around the “Tempe Long Loop.” The race started with the second half of the loop, followed by one more full loop. Call it a half-hour of hard, intense, leg-burning riding.

Who won? Chances are, everyone who rode has forgotten. Winning is secondary: Showing up and having fun is the real goal.

For the most part, the riders are fast, committed races. But there's room for newer riders and intermediates. In fact, a few more intermediate riders turning up could add quite a bit to the events. It's a great way to get used to riding in the close quarters that you'll see in most races.

The course is also more challenging than the typical Papago Park fare: It starts off in the rockier, steeper south section. The Long Loop features some steep climbs and twisty descents with an occasional drop-off. It's a good test of legs, lungs and skill.

The rain spiced up Tuesday's race. Instead of solid reliable traction, racers contended with rocks slick with silty mud and flowing water. Drivetrains balked and disc brakes squealed.

It was also a good day to show up with a light system since the clouds and rain quickly cast darkness over the trail just as the race started.

If you're planning to try one of the remaining Short Track at Papago races, be sure to start watching the event's Facebook page the day before. That's where you'll find out which of several rotating courses will be that day's selection.

There is no need to pre-register, and there's no entry fee. Just show up, pedal and have fun.
