Hey Baltimore, welcome to the ride!

“There’s nothing like the exhilaration of a well executed curve along a winding road…”

So, you’re a biker, huh?  Some say that to be a “biker” you have to ride a Harley.  Others argue that sport bikes or metric cruisers are the best bikes to ride.  Who’s right, who’s wrong?

Maybe there is no right or wrong.  Maybe what’s more important than the name or logo on your two-wheeler is the fact that you’re on two-wheels.  Maybe what’s more important are the reasons people universally say they're drawn to riding: freedom, individuality, expression, excitement and challenge.

I’ve ridden sport-bikes, cruisers, dirt-bikes and metrics.  Yes, I prefer some “rides” over others, but for me, the enjoyment of riding comes from far more than a name.  Things like the thrill I feel every time I press the starter button and my engine rumbles to life; or the feeling of cutting through the wind as I roll on the throttle.  There’s nothing like the exhilaration of a well executed curve along a winding road, or the sense of smell only a ride in the country can provide!  And then there’s the camaraderie I feel every time I pass a brother or sister biker and we wave to each other, no matter what we’re riding.

To me, there’s no “right” or “wrong” motorcycle.  There’s only the question “do you ride?”  If you answered “yes” and you live in Maryland, you’re among the luckiest bikers in the world.  Our state really is a “miniature America.”  Within a few hours of Baltimore, we have a wide variety of fantastic riding: the plains of the Eastern Shore, the scenery of the Ocean City beaches, the rural roads of Harford, Cecil and Carroll counties and the challenge of the western Maryland mountains.  No matter who you are or what you ride, Maryland offers something for you!

Through the articles, links and reader comments on this site, I intend to create a place where the riders of our area can come together and share some of the common interests that unite us as “Bikers in Baltimore!”  Please book-mark this page, stop back often and leave your comments regarding the articles.  Feel free to email me at tbachur@yahoo.com with suggestions for future articles, enjoyable roads, organized rides or anything else related to riding!  Welcome Baltimore, now, go ride!

Good article, Tom. I can attest to the challenge of riding US 50 in the Maryland mountains. It was a gorgeous slice of Americana, though.
