Will Harley-Davidson survive?
Will Harley-Davidson go bankrupt soon? On one level this is hard to believe, but on another it's not. There are a lot of people out there who think Harley may go under.
Think about it. Practically everyone needs a car, but Chrysler is on the brink. While there are a lot of people who want a motorcycle, a great many of them don't need one and especially if the bike would cost as much as some cars.
Add to that the fact that Harley has union labor. I've got nothing against unions: I'm just stating a fact. Union wagess are a big cost.
I know that I've seen a lot of articles lately about stock analysts downgrading Harley stock to "Sell." Analysts don't often give Sell ratings. For them, "Hold" translates to Sell. An actual Sell is NOT GOOD.
And the share price continues to drop. It closed today at $13.70. That's down from a high of $48.05 just a few months ago. Meanwhile, the CEO is leaving and the CFO already left.
Can this happen? I am not the person with the knowledge to give a definitive answer to that question, but you may want to read this article from Today's Financial News. This writer has much closer access to H-D than most people and he thinks it's a very real possibility.
Wow!
